.xxx top level domains come this year

Like it or not but a new .xxx top level domain name for porn industry is coming this year. Last week the Board of Directors of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved entering into a contract with ICM Registry to operate a .xxx top level domain name (TLD).

First domain names with the new TLD are planned to start later this year and the price will range from $75 to $100 each.

Meantime, in June, ICAMM will approve guidelines to allow anyone to get their own new top level domain name if they have enough money to pay for that. Such guidelines will result in appearance of literally thousands of new top level domains within a few years, from .Shop to .London to .Google.

However, some domains would produce controversy and hot discussion. Thus, .gay and .sex will certainly be opposed by conservative groups. Meantime, governments will protect all matter of geographic terms. And while ICANN has to listen to advice from its Governmental Advisory Committee, it doesn’t have to follow it. In fact, it disagreed with its advice on .xxx.
