As e-readers makers are preparing for the competition posed by Apple iPad which can function as an e-reader as well with a starting price of $499, Sony Corp decided to join the trend set by Amazon and Barnes.

On Sony's website, the Daily Edition version of the Reader was listed at $299.99, down from $349.99. The Touch Edition was priced at $169.99 from $249.99, and the basic Pocket Edition was discounted to $149.99 from $169.99.

Amazon last week cut the price on Kindle electronic reader, the Kindle DX, to $379 from $489. Earlier Amazon cut the Kindle to $189 soon after Barnes & Noble lowered the price of its Nook to $199.
