Microsoft is obliged to pay over $105 million for violating VirnetX patent

Texas court obliged Microsoft to pay VirnetX, communications software producer, $105.75 million after a jury found the software giant guilty of intended violation of two patents belonging to the company.

In the case that started over two years ago, VirnetX blamed Microsoft for violating the two patents, which are related to communications security, at the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

The willful nature of the violation means Microsoft faced treble damages in the lawsuit, according to the court documents. The original complaint was filed by VirnetX on February, 15, 2007.

VirnetX built its patent portfolio from a US Central Intelligence Agency security project. The company anticipates Microsoft to appeal the decision.
