Who has the largest number of Twitter followers in 2009?

According to a recent research conducted by INQ the top place in the list of people who have the largest number of Twitter followers belongs to a Scottish fellow most people haven't heard of. He is Mashable's CEO, Pete Cashmore. He's got a little more than 1.8 million followers at the moment.

As reported by INQ Social Mobile at first the new list, entitled Twitterati, identifies the online influence of the 20 most popular UK Tweeters across five categories including entertainment, music, politics, sport and technology. But the study also explored the current top 20 most influential international individuals across each of the same five categories.

Next was P. Diddy (2.3 million followers), followed by Stephen Fry (1.1 million). Oprah snagged fourth place, while Kim Kardashian ranked fifth. From there, Ellen DeGeneres, Ryan Seacrest, Barack Obama, Ashton Kutcher, and Britney Spears rounded out the top ten. Biz Stone, Twitter's cofounder, wound up in 14th place.

Thus even the US President is not in the top 5 though he is in the top 10. Her you can see the full list of international influences.
