Intel rejects implementation Larrabee graphics chip

After Intel decided that delays in the project would make it uncompetitive, the company rejected its plans to launch an advanced graphics chip based on its novel Larrabee design.

The move is a setback to Intel's plans to compete with the dominant players in the graphics market, Nvidia Corp and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

The company had intention to launch the graphics card in the 2009-2010 timeframe. Intel made such a decision as Larrabee's silicon and software development are behind where it had hoped they would be at this point in the project.

Currently, Intel intends to be using its first Larrabee product as a software development platform for both graphic and high performance computing.

Next year, Intel will present more of its graphics plans, according spokesman Nick Knupffer.
