China wants stronger social values in online games

China unveiled its intention to stiffen regulations in one of its fastest growing sectors, online games, that is expected to grow by between 30% and 50% this year, with a sales revenue of 24 billion yuan to 27 billion yuan. Thus, regulators are directing game operators to strengthen socialist values in their games and employ specialized staff to supervise content.

As China's Ministry of Culture stated game operators must re-examine their game offerings for obscene and violent content and limit the number of virtual marriages and player-versus-player combat.

These changes are supposed to influence such companies as Shanda Games, NetEase.com and Tencent Holdings.

As William Ding, NetEase's CEO, reported he was not aware of the full details of the circular, but that the firm is willing to comply.

China has been stepping up control over the gaming industry. Earlier this month, the other regulator required NetEase.com to stop operating World of Warcraft, due to "gross violations" of regulations.
