Contrary to most iPhone users’ fears ikee worm is not too dangerous
As this weekend reports warned a number of iPhones in Australia to be injured by an ikee worm that only replaces the device's background wallpaper with an image of 80s pop icon Rick Astley. Nevertheless, the ikee worm will not affect most users of Apple's smartphone as it only infects jailbroken iPhones, running the SSH app with the default password, making up the least share of iPhone market. As the security company Sophos announced, the worm tries to find another jailbroken iPhone on the mobile phone network and install itself. However, there have been no confirmed reports of infections outside Australia's territory. Jailbreaking an iPhone removes Apple's security mechanism, enabling the phone to run any software outside the company's own App Store, including nasties such ikee. Apple criticizes jailbreaking, saying these actions related to an iPhone voids the device's warranty. The Cupertino company is cracking down on iPhone, and is already reportedly shipping new jailbreak-proof 3GS models. Apple is also hiring security specialists to tackle to problem. Security experts stated that as long as an iPhone is not jailbroken, a holder supposed to be protected from the ikee worm. Having a iPhone, These instructions can help to protect an iPhone in case it’s jailbroken. Meantime, F-Secure cautious malicious variants of ikee could soon appear.
