Sales of Need For Speed exceed 100 million units with revenues amounting $2.7bn

Electronic Arts announced that its 15 year-old racing franchise Need For Speed has sold more than 100 million units across 15 different titles.

The first Need For Speed game was launched in 1994 and attracted much attention of the players due to its impressive visuals and licensed cars changing the way people play video games. Since that time the company released 14 iterations of the franchise across 14 different game platforms which all combined have now sold a staggering 100 million units.

Electronic Arts stated that to date the Need for Speed franchise has brought over $2.7 billion in revenue for the gaming giant with over 6.2 million individual units sold which is more than auto industry has sold cars.

After discontent and concerns expressed last year over the franchise’s getting obsolete the company launched an update that produced a positive stir among the players with Nintendo Wii and DS game Need for Speed introduced earlier this year. The new version of Need for Speed game, the PC-based online title Need for Speed: World Online, will be piloted in winter in Taiwan.
