Comcast will let subscribers watch TV shows on their cellpones

Wednesday Comcast Corp unveiled its intention to offer its new wireless Internet service that is to enable subscribers to watch their favorite TV shows on mobile devices.

The company will be bundling the wireless service with its home Internet package and could eventually include its On Demand Online service, which will provide subscribers with the ability to watch cable shows on the Web.

Cable companies are now looking for the ways to ensure they do not lose subscribers to free or cheaper On Demand Web services as increasing number of users are looking forward for the ability to watch videos on their home PCs and on wireless devices, like Apple Inc's iPod and iPhone. Instead the cable companies are teaming with content providers to allow paying TV subscribers watch shows instantly via the Web at no extra charge

Comcast is also testing adding a voice option to the wireless package that would put it in more direct competition with mobile phone providers, such as AT&T Inc and Verizon Communications Inc.

Recently, the company has commenced deploying its wireless Internet services in some US cities as part of a joint venture with Clearwire Corp, that uses WiMax technology.

Comcast’s shares gained 16 cents to $17.58, while Clearwire rose by 40 cents to $9.22 at mid-afternoon.
