Stimulus act is being protected by White House representatives

Christina Romer, Council of Economic Advisers Chair, stated the act, signed by Obama in February and working during five months, is "absolutely" working as intended and blasted critics who have taken shots at its effectiveness.

As Romer said, that, along with actions taken by the Treasury and the Federal Reserve to stabilize financial markets and the housing sector, the act "is helping to slow the decline and change the trajectory of the economy”.

Quoting several economic statistics, Romer said that the stimulus has been effective, including a slowing of the decline of growth in the second quarter to 1% from 6.4% in the first quarter. As for the job losses, they are also improving; however, it’s still "horrendous". During the second quarter, the US lost an average of 436,000 jobs a month, against an average of 700,000 jobs a month in the first quarter.

Some Republicans and local officials around the country have criticized the stimulus package, as they have a firm belief that it hasn't given the economy the support it was supposed to and that it isn't flowing quickly enough to cities.

Thu, for instance, Dallas was promised more than $108 million in stimulus funds, but, as Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert reported ‘we haven't received any dollars, and if you look across the country, that's the same situation”.

Romer, meanwhile, said defending the act that the impact of the stimulus is almost certain to increase in the next several quarters. She claims the White House anticipates the fiscal stimulus to be about $100 billion in each of the next five quarters.
