Sky reports PC repair shops are trying to defraud customers

Sky investigation uncovered that unscrupulous repairmen are prepared to try bank fraud as well as PC repair shops might snoop for porn on laptops they fix.

Surveillance software was adjusted by Sky on a brand-new laptop, before rigging an easy to diagnose fault by dislodging an internal memory chip from its connection. That helped to prevent Windows PCs from booting. However, all of six repair shops, except one, put through a mystery shopper test by Sky either misdiagnosed the fault or overcharged for repairs.

Laptop Revival from Hammersmith, West London appeared to become the worst overcharging offender, claiming the laptop needed a new motherboard at a cost of £130, shortly after identifying the genuine fault.

Laptop Revival managers denied they knew anything about the alleged abuses of trust carried out by its technicians when confronted by Sky over the abuse.

E-commerce investigator for Trading Standards Richard Webb told Sky that the investigation it had carried out revealed that abuse of trust within the laptop repair industry in the UK can possibly become much worse than it previously was expected.
