1.3 million of Americans affected by check scam

Consumer Federation of America new research found nearly one-third of American adults have been affected by fake check scams, usually involving fraudsters wanting to send them checks (for prizes, purchases or grants) and then asking them to wire back some of the money.

The study also revealed that an estimated 1.3 million Americans have been taken in by the scams, having an average of $3,000 to $4,000 lost when they wired the money.

From 2,000 adults inquired, 66% were affected by sweepstakes or lotteries, 36% - by bogus grants, 35% - while working at home.

To prevent check fraud, it’s very important not to wire money to someone who is not familiar well as it’s the easiest way for criminals to make off with funds without a trace.

As for the government, to protect from scam it never pays to claim a prize, pays to receive a grant and sends money as part of a work-at-home job.
