Credit cards unaffordable for U.S. consumers who turn to debit

According to the research from Mintel Comperemedia, the service providing direct marketing competitive intelligence, over 43% of the Americans prefer using debit cards rather than credit cards, being affected by the global collapse. 

 

22% of the US citizens reported to Mintel they can not reckon any more on both debit and credit cards, that appeared to be the result of reduced expenses. The majority of the inquired, 83%, responded they had to change their spending habits following the economy recession. 

 

Mintel survey reflected in the first quarter of 2009, credit card issuers cut solicitations by a half, reducing 49% from Q4 2008. As the company measured, US card issuers sent under 500 million offers in Q1 2009, that set the lowest quarterly total since 2000. At the same time, the volume of debit card mail offers almost doubled in Q1 2009 compared to Q4 2008, while checking account solicitations showed 29% increase.
