Nokia introduces first mobile phone with NFC based on the SIM
This week Nokia announced the release of a new Nokia 6216 classic handset which incorporates support for NFC (Near Field Communication) technology on the SIM card. Being the third mobile phone with integrated NFC support the 6216 classic is the first mobile device that puts the secure element of the contactless payment technology on the SIM card.

Previously the secure element that stores credit card information was incorporated into the phone itself. It was wireless operators who wanted it to be put on the SIM card because it makes it easier for them to roll out new services while users in turn can switch phones and bring their mobile wallet with them.

The new mobile phone is scheduled for the shipment starting the third quarter of 2009. Initially it will be shipped in selected parts of Europe and Asia. The price of the 6216 is about €150 (US$195) before taxes and subsidies according to the company reports.
