57% of mobile payments worldwide fall upon the U.S.
According to Bango, the analytics vendor, in February the mobile users from the US have accounted for 29% of Web traffic and 57% of payments worldwide. As a result the US became the country with the highest rate of Web browsing and payments conducted from mobile phones leaving behind the UK, the number-one at the end of 2008.

Anil Malhotra, Bango’s senior vice president of marketing, stated the results corresponded to the forecasts as the US already had 245 million wireless subscribers. Moreover, Bango had recently found out that in 2008 the US was the country with the fastest acceleration in mobile payments.

Another interesting fact that the company had discovered was that mobile browsing and purchasing were not tied together in all the countries. US, UK, Portugal, South Africa and Spain which were among the top 10 browsing rankings were also in top 10 for payments. However, other five countries within the top 10 browsing, including India and Indonesia, did not make it into the top 10 for payments. The fact could be explained by disposable incomes being less common in those countries.

Although, an awareness and interest in mobile browsing has been driven mostly by Apple’s iPhone, Malhotra continued, many companies that still don’t have a mobile-specific presence should take the fact into consideration. He said, those companies should create mobile specific websites and add special features demanded by customers to them. Malhotra brought an example of British Airways whose site was more difficult to use in comparison to the one owned by United Airlines.
