IC3 is to prevent cyber crime matters
As the influence of the Internet increases many people get to use the Internet to send and receive various kind of information, business detailing, sensitive information. Some info designed as Scams, some as deceptive advertising, but many of them cause online fraud losses. And that is why the Internet Crime Compliant Center was created for. Firstly, it was established as partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C). However, it extended its functions. And today IC3's mission is to serve as a vehicle to receive, develop and refer criminal complaints regarding the rapidly expanding arena of cyber crime. It offers customers a convenient and easy-to-use reporting mechanism that makes authorities be informed about suspected criminal or civil violations.

Since its establishment IC3 received different kind of complaints related to cyber crime. Among them are online fraud in its many forms including Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) matters, Computer Intrusions (hacking), Economic Espionage (Theft of Trade Secrets), Online Extortion, International Money laundering, Identity Theft, and a growing list of Internet facilitated crimes.

Formerly known as the Internet Fraud Compliant Center IC3 was renamed in October 2003. It aimed to better reflect to cyber crime matters and to minimize the need for one to distinguish "Internet Fraud" from other potentially overlapping cyber crimes. Today IC3 responds to the Internet related crimes at federal, state, local and international level.
