Credit provider Barclaycard, owned by Barclays, says it plans to issue over a million OnePulse contactless payment cards across the UK this year. Launched last September, the OnePulse standard chip and PIN card has built-in functions such as e-ticketing Oyster card functionality and Visa’s ‘wave and pay’ contactless payment technology.
At the same time, Barclaycard began introducing the in-store contactless payment acceptance technology One Touch. 4000 retail outlets use the OneTouch technology across the UK and Barclaycard says it wants this number to increase to 20,000 stores by the end of 2008. Eat, Coffee Republic, Books Etc, Krispy Kreme and Yo! Sushi are among those UK retailers who have already installed the technology. Barclaycard revealed in November that it plans to launch a m-payments trial as part of mobile Oyster transit scheme in London. The bank said it would credit 225 of the 500 mobile phones to be used in the pilot with GBP 200 worth of non-reloadable funds for making small contactless payments at participating retailers.
