Lisa Edelstein who has played the role of Cuddy issued a statement on Tuesday announcing her departure from the program. “After much consideration, I am moving onward with a combination of disappointment at leaving behind a character I have loved playing for seven years and excitement of the new opportunities in acting and producing that lie ahead.”

According to multiple entertainment sites, although Edelstein’s contract was up for renewal, it was not considered problematic. She and two of her co-stars, Omar Epps who plays Dr. Foreman and Robert Sean Leonard, the show’s Dr. James Wilson were in the final year of their agreements with NBC Universal’s production company, Universal Media Studios. Both Epps and Leonard re-signed according to deadline.

“House”, a regular ratings winner for Fox has seen its audience decline in the past two years, but it was renewed for an eighth season, expected to be its last. In a March interview with TV Line, Edelstein said, “Nobody at work seems to think it won’t [return]. Everybody wants to come to a deal, and I certainly am looking forward to a Season 8.”

Reports surfaced that Edelstein, along with Leonard and Epps were asked to take a small pay cut, from what was reported as $175,000 per episode and there were strong feelings on the part of the show runner-exec producer Katie Jacobs that Edelstein had to be retained.

From an interview last week posted on Blog Critics website, “All the pieces necessary to live up to what I think this show can be next season are not quite in place,” Jacobs said. “Lisa is such a valuable member [of the cast]. I challenge any other actress on TV to do what she is so—does so, you know, seemingly effortlessly. She goes between drama, comedy, intelligence, sex appeal… It’s certainly not my plan or David’s plan or the creative team’s plan to not have Lisa in the show, and I can just say that I will not rest until I figure it out.” There has not been any reaction from Jacobs, to Edelstein’s statement, as of this writing.

With this season’s final show ready for broadcast this month, it remains to be seen how the producers will deal with the exit of Dr. Cuddy when the show resumes broadcasting in the Fall. This week’s episode, which aired on Monday night had a plot line that seemed to suggest a softening in Cuddy’s position about staying away from her former boyfriend, House.

The episode ended with Dr. House getting a note from Cuddy that made it sound like she was open to being friends with him again. The couple had been avoiding each other since a sudden and emotional breakup a couple of months ago. The romance between Cuddy and House only came to fruition a year ago in the final episode of season six. The couple managed to make it through most of the season before the inevitable parting took place. House’s addiction and fear of attachment became more than Cuddy could tolerate.

TV Line reported that actor Hugh Laurie who has played the title character for its full show run is touring Europe this summer to support the release of a blues album. He is also filming a movie.

House returns this Monday for Season 8.
