IBM joins Samsung to develop chip technologies for smartphones

IBM and Samsung will be jointly developing semiconductor technology for smartphones and other mobile gadgets as it appears from the conjoint statement made by the two companies this week.

International Business Machines Corp and Samsung Electronics Co plan to research new chip materials and improvements in process technology, to develop smaller and more energy efficient semiconductor products, they said.

USB 3.0 video at 4.8 gigabits-per-second speed is coming next year

DisplayLink Inc., a semiconductor company, reported that it will ship a new chip that allows enables video to run in "SuperSpeed" USB 3.0 standard devices in the second half of 2010. That means it will be available for the use in consumer products as early as next Christmas.

In January at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas the company plans to demonstrate a USB 3.0 device running its chip that will transmit video at up to 4.8 gigabits-per-second, USB 3.0's maximum rate.

How fast will technology industry recover from recession?

 A study provided by Gartner shows that while there are some sectors in technology industry improving since the worst in a decade recession burst out the damage caused by the economic turmoil may be felt for a few years.

In its report Gartner said that majority of the electronics industries like the consumer, wireless and semiconductor sectors are awaiting the first signs of recovery. However the stability of product demand and effectiveness of government stimulus packages still remains uncertain.
