El Salvador represents the smallest but at the same time the most densely populated country in Central America with almost 7.2 mn inhabitants. The country, which lies on the Gulf of Fonseca, borders the Pacific Ocean between Guatemala and Honduras. The capital city of San Salvador is the largest city of the republic. El Salvador has the third largest economy in the region, behind Costa Rica and Panama, with GDP per capita standing at $4,365. Actually, most of El Salvador's economy has been hampered by natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes.
