Reverse lookup for cell phone numbers: free or fee directory service?

If you need to find a person by cell phone number, you may be wondering whether you can do this type of search for free. There are many sites on the Internet which claim to offer free lookup services for cell phone and unlisted numbers. Do these sites really offer free service or is this just a marketing trick?

A few short years ago, the only method available to trace cell phone numbers was to get the police or a private detective involved in your business. This was because cell phone numbers were and still are considered private information.

The owners of this information - wireless giants like Sprint and Verizon, did not offer a directory to the public with the personal information connected to the numbers they own and service. They still don’t. Public directories like the famous White and Yellow Pages are useless for cell phone number lookups as they simply do not have mobile number listings.

A few years back, there was some talk about putting together a public reverse cellphone lookup directory. All of the different cell phone service providers would contribute their numbers, and the directory would be made available. However, the concern about telemarketers and privacy caused the idea to be abandoned for now.

Yet there are countless sites online that promise free results. Why is that? Well, they can deliver free results on listed landline numbers. But any directory can do that. But still they advertise free results on cellphone number searches.

Their tactic is to use misleading information to get you into their site. They want you to go through the whole search process. Only when you are one click away from the results will they reveal that the report will cost a fee after all. By then, their hope is that you purchase the results anyway. A classic bait and switch tactic.

A more effective way to look up cell phone number information online is through a private cell phone directory like Reverse Phone Detective. Using this service, you'll be able to find information on almost any number you enter. Reverse Phone Detective provides you with millions of records that you can access for a small fee.

You'll also get advanced tools like free search assistance, access to expanded people search database records, even family member information! All you need to do is enter the area code and seven digit number, and you'll get information like the number owner's name and address and more.

Reverse Phone Detective

I don't know why people listen to you all. That site is just a crooked as the rest. They pull the same crap on you. You get to the point where you think you've finally got "it" (i.e., the name of the person behind the number), and sure as I'm sitting here, the nex page coming at you is them asking you to pay. I paid for a one-year subscription and they promised I wouldn't be charged for "no information." Guess what? All of my inquiries were non-published numbers. The same freakin' information I can get from www.whitepages.com! And, to top i all off, I didn't get any further information when I did finally get a name unless I paid dearly for it. Forget these jerks. I was told that a private investigator would be my best way to go. There's got to be someplace we can go to look these numbers up. This is highway robbery.

Reverse Lookup

I can understand being upset by the reverse directories. It's very frustrating that you can't get the name for a cell phone number when you really need it. I think the author, however, was trying to explain why that's the case. The government actually enacted laws at the request of consumers to protect cell phone numbers and keep them private. The law restricted what wireless carriers would be able to do in trying to put out a white pages listing for cell phones by requiring them to go through some serious red tape before being able to do so. Wireless carriers, not wanting to upset their subscribers, chose not to take the difficult route the government laid before them. However, the law does not apply to these third party directories so they are allowed to assemble information about cell phone numbers and owners. They don't give it away for free because it costs them money to get the information themselves and they have to pass along those costs. So, while it would be handy to have that information available for everyone's use, it's the general consumer population and the politicians who acted on behalf of the interests of consumers who are responsible for you not being able to get reverse lookup for cell phone numbers for free. I sympathize with your frustration and hope you find the information you need.

Reverse Cell Phone Lookup

I find that most reverse cell phone lookup services that claim to be free really are not so you might as well spend a little to get the service you want.

Free Phone Searches

There is no free lunch * When is the last time you had a free lunch? When is the last time you paid $39 and ate the all you can eat buffet for a year? Would that not throw up a red flag at the entrance to the restaurant? Would you really eat somewhere that offered free food all the time? I would be worried where the meat came from. At the same time the myth of the Free Cell Phone look up was born. When you need the "gospel" the truth on a phone number - visit the site that the police use - http://www.NonPublished.com NO - it’s not free.

No free Lunch - Great anology...

This is the best description to date about free cell phone look ups. Thanks John and Mary Arti
